Migrate a Windows 98 Workstation to Active Directory
Instructions for joining a Windows 98 computer to Active Directory. There are no users settings to migrate.
*This procedure assumes that the user account has already been migrated to the appropriate domain (i.e. facultystaff.eku.edu) and the Computer account has been created in Active Directory within appropriate OU.
- Login to workstation as user normally would, if not already
- Make note of any user specific drive mappings that may exist
- Backup users Faculty Web Pages (typically the W: drive) to local drive
- Install ADClient from provided media (May require reboot)
- Install scr56en.exe from provided media (No Reboot)
- Right on ‘Network Neighborhood’ and choose ‘Properties’
- Click the ‘Identification’ Tab and confirm ‘Computer Name’ matches EKU Tag number located on PC in this format: EKU123456 (if not, change)
- Click ‘Configuration’ Tab
- Select ‘Client for Microsoft Networks’ then click ‘Properties’
- Confirm check box ‘Logon to Windows NT domain’ is checked (if not, check it)
- In ‘Window NT domain’ field, type: facultystaff
- Click ok
- You may be prompted to reboot. If so, click yes. If not, reboot manually.
- Login with users domain account.
- Confirm user settings stayed intact
- Confirm drive mappings are correct
- Confirm Email in Outlook still works (Change EKUMAIL to FACSTAFF in Outlook, if needed)
- Copy previous backed up Web Information to users new W: drive
Other steps to take before departure:
- Uninstall Novell client (if applicable)
- Run Windows Update. Apply ALL current Critical Updates
- Install/Update/Configure Norton Antivirus and set for ‘Managed’ to WINRAS (following additional provided documentation)
