Migrate a Windows XP/2000 computer to Active Directory

Instructions on how to Join an existing Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer to the domain and migrate a users documents and settings.

*This procedure assumes that the user account has already been migrated to the appropriate domain (i.e. facultystaff.eku.edu), the Computer account has been created in Active Directory within appropriate OU, and that the ‘local user profile’ is an administrator of local machine.

    Before migration:
  • Login to workstation as user normally would, if not already.
If you can't do this then try to get their password from the dept. or move to next PC.
  • Run Windows Updates. Apply ALL current Critical Updates. Reboot as neccesary until there are no more.
Gather PC information and note on ticket:
  • Get the PC processor speed. You can get this from right clicking "My Computer" and selecting properties. Some Windows 2000 and all Windows 98 machines won't work this way and you will have to catch it during a reboot.
  • Confirm EKU tag exists on PC.   If not, supply one or use the PCs' serial number and note this on the ticket.
  • Make note of any user specific drive mappings that may exist or any shared folders/printers that they have setup.
These have to be put back in working order and the migration will most likely change/break them.
If the user has and uses the W drive for a webpage/website:
  • Create a folder on the C: drive called ‘webbackup’ and copy users Faculty Web Pages (typically the W: drive) to that folder on the C: drive.
    Start migration:
  • Check to see if Symantec needs to be updated. If so, run the update (do not reboot)
  • Uninstall the Novell Client (do not reboot)
  • Clear all temp files and internet cache, if desired (optional)
  • Run ‘moveprofile’ script from provided floppy disk
    • Click on ‘Start’, then ‘Run’
    • Type ‘a:\moveprofile.bat’, then hit ‘Enter’
    • Follow on screen prompts / Provide information as requested
    • (Note, repeat until you are prompted for computer/user information)
    • If you chose to SYSPREP, the Machine will reboot at end of process
    • If you didn't SYSPREP, you will need to reboot
    • Make sure to remove floppy disk during reboot
  • Login with the local ‘ITDSmigrate’ account created by the script (confirm you are logging into the local machine)
  • Join workstation to Domain
    • Right Click ‘My Computer’
    • Choose ‘Properties’
    • Click ‘Computer Name’ tab
    • Click ‘Change’ button
    • Click ‘Domain’ bullet under ‘Member of’ section
    • In ‘Domain’ field type: facultystaff.eku.edu
    • Click ‘OK’
    • When prompted for credentials, provide your domain username & password.
    • Do not reboot at this time.
If you do, no big deal, just relog in as the ITDSMigrate account.
  • Move the users' local profile to a facultystaff profile:
  • Run ‘moveprofile’ script again from floppy
    • Click on ‘Start’, then ‘Run’
    • Type ‘a:\moveprofile.bat’, then hit ‘Enter’
    • Follow on screen prompts
    • Users profile will be migrated at end of process
    • Double check this before moving on.
Do this by looking at the user profile list and make sure you see a FACULTYSTAFF\USERNAME profile there and the local COMPUTERNAME\USERNAME profile gone.
    • Remove floppy disk
  • Login with users Domain account (Make sure you’re logging into facultystaff, not local machine)
  • Confirm user settings stayed intact
  • Confirm drive mappings are correct
  • Confirm Email in Outlook still works
  • Copy previous backed up Web Information to users new W: drive
