Symantec Antivirus Installation

Describes installing Symantec Antivirus software.

Where are the installation files I will need?

Double click “My Computer” and go into the Q drive. The installation files are located under Install\NAV90\. Here you should see three folders (SAV90, MSI, and manageme), a readfirst.txt file, and SavPluginUtil.exe.

How do I install/upgrade to version 9.0 and make it managed?

To install for the first time or to upgrade from previous versions to 9.0 you install the same way. Under the SAV90 folder, run Setup.exe. Select defaults if asked for setup choices. The install will want you to reboot at the end of the installation and if you are running Windows 98, it may ask you to reboot twice. Do these reboots when asked and be ready for them when they come (don’t have anything else going on that you can’t stop).

How do I know if it completed and if it is managed?

You should see the Symantec symbol in the bottom right corner of your screen near the clock. Should be a yellow shield. Double click it to bring up Symantec. If you don’t see one, then click , , , “Symantec Antivirus”. That will bring up the same window as if you double click the shield. The window that comes up should under “General Information” have “Parent Server” as WINRAS and under “Program Versions” should start with 9.0. If both of these are correct, then you are good to go, the client is upgraded and managed. There is a problem with upgrading from version 8.1 to version 9.0. To make sure you don’t have this problem, open up Outlook. If you get an error about the plug-in, then you will need to run the fix (instructions below).

The client isn’t managed by WINRAS, what do I do?

Go back to the folder with all of our installation files. Go into the manageme folder and run GRCDrop.exe. Now reboot. The client should now be managed by WINRAS.

How do I run the fix for the Outlook plug-in error?

Go back to the folder with all of our installation files. Run SavPluginUtil.exe. It will first look for any old registry entries that need deleted. Once that is finished, you will be ask if you would like to delete the Extend.dat file. Choose YES. Once it finishes, open up Outlook to make sure the error is gone. If it isn’t, run SavPluginUtil.exe once more before trying anything else.
